Availability Matters

By Jobin Thomas Benoy

We live in a busy world. A fast moving world , where technology has dominated over human lives. It's very important on how we plan our days. It's high time we start analyzing our lives and figuring out the time we spend for His kingdom.

Many a times we live in the notion that God is looking for some baked people or to be doing His ministry we got to be a prolific preacher or so on. But let us be clear that God is not looking for abled people but He is looking for people who are available for Him, who is willing to do what is told of him, and to do without a second thought.

When we read Mathew 4:19 ., we see Jesus walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers Simon and Andrew who were fishermen by profession and he tells them. ' Follow me and I will make you fishers of men ' and verse 20 we read , They immediately left their nets and followed him. They never had a second thought about it . They made themselves available for Him putting their livelihood behind. Many a times, even we do have opportunities to do what God has planned for us , God has send us to this earth with a purpose as we are His ambassadors but often we fail to do the duty as we fail making ourselves available.

Many a times we have a feeling that I'm not qualified enough or I'm not able enough as my co brothers to do His ministry . Its important to know that it's not our ability but it's our availability that matters. Jesus chose fishermen over the learned people of the society as His disciples which itself proves a fact that availability matters the most.

The verse that encouraged me the most regarding this fact is 1 Corinthians 1:26-28 , which says

  • For you see your calling, brethren that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble are called

  • But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty

  • And the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are

Here Paul is addressing to the church which is at Corinth, telling the people that you need not be a wise or strong person for God to use you, here we read God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty.

In 1 Samuel 17, we read about an incident about a war between Philistines and Israelites. In verse 11 we read Saul and all Israel were afraid hearing the words of Goliath., when the abled men succumbed to fear , we see God using a shepherd boy who had never been to a battlefield to beat Goliath as he made himself available. And rest is history.

Many a times the reason we fail is because we try to compare ourselves with others in terms of ability. We often say he is much better and abled preacher , I can never match with him, or he is a great vocalist or musician , I'm not as abled as him. Or he is a prolific writer , I can never match his level .

Friends let's stop comparing our abilities. Because availability matters to God. This fact is well illustrated in the parable of talents. To one, the master gave 5 talents, to the second the master gave two talents and to the third he gave one talent . The second person did not compare the talents he had with the first one but did his best to double it and the master was pleased and so with the first person. But the third did compare and he dug thinking it would be a good idea and the master wasn't pleased.

No matter if we are able or not God wants us to give our best and be available for him. God used Joseph, a prisoner to be in charge of all of Egypt. God used David , a shepherd to be the king of Israel and we read God used Peter, a fisherman to lead 1000s of people to salvation.

Let me tell you God can do extraordinary things through our lives all we need is to BE AVAILABLE for him and stop questioning our ability.
