His Grace

By Jobin Thomas Benoy

2 Corinthians 12:9

But he said to me, “ My Grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that CHRIST's power may rest on me.”

In this verse that we saw, Paul is preaching to the Corinthian people. Like many of us, the major problem Corinthians had was self-reliance and boasting.

But Paul makes a statement , that he has nothing to boast about except his weakness. Now why does Paul says he has nothing to boast about except his weakness ? Because it is his weakness that makes him realize how much he needs to rely on God.

Paul claims that God has given him a thorn in flesh in order to prevent him from becoming conceited because of his powerful experiences and revelations from God.

He pleaded to God to remove this but God’s response was my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

Grace means blessings or favor from God when we don’t deserve it. God chooses to offer salvation to us, despite our rebellious nature and disobedience to him. John 3:16 says he has offered a path to heaven if we follow him.

Paul here tries to help the Corinthians to do the same, to realize only God’s Grace is sufficient for us, and we should boast in nothing else but God’s Grace.

We as humans, there are times when pride and self reliant nature creeps into us where we thing I can do all things relying on my own ability and I am enough and we tend to forget God and source of all the blessings and privileges that we enjoy.

If we fall into that bracket, it’s high time we realize that we have nothing but God’s Grace to boast in.

Similar to the Corinthians, we can sometimes get a little puffed up. If we have a certain spiritual gift or gifts ministry, say we are strong prayer warriors for instances, there might be times when we get prideful about that gift.

As James 1:17 says we tend to forget the source of that gift

Often we can receive a thorn in our side to remind us of our weakness and the need to rely on God’s Grace.

In our own lives, let us try to find areas where we might be relying on something else apart from God and let us turn to His Grace alone.
